Cross-Border Survey

Understanding Cross-Border Travel Challenges

Increasing security measures, longer queues, and heightened wait times have led to significant frustration for cross-border travelers and resulted in lost sales for merchants and service providers, particularly for retailers who rely on purchases from Mexican travelers. Despite these challenges, there has been little systematic analysis of cross-border travel activities or the effects of bridge delays.

A Collaborative Research Initiative

In response to this critical information gap, the City of El Paso’s International Bridges Department (IBD) and El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF) have teamed up to conduct comprehensive research and build an understanding of the impact of policies, delays, and missed opportunities on cross-border travelers and local retailers.

Key Objectives
Inform Policymakers
Provide regular social and expenditure characteristics of cross-border travelers.
Analyze the Monetary Impact
Estimate the economic effects of purchases made by crossers within the regional economy.
Data-Driven Insights
Through face-to-face surveys and input-output analysis, the survey helps shed light on this critical area and informs better decision-making for the region.
